The infinite power of people
This afternoon I was reading a theological book (Jacob: a brief theological introduction by Deidre Nicole Green) when I happened on a quick mention of power over vs power with. It sounded familiar, and so a short google search later I was reading this PDF from Brené Brown.
Personally I really enjoy Brené’s writing and research. It could be because she works at my alma mater (Go Coogs!), it could be that her Texan voice bypasses my defenses and allows me to relate quickly, through shared experiences and upbringing. Whatever it is I enjoy her writing.
Hopefully by now the PDF has downloaded for you. If so, take a break from this email and read it.
Welcome back!
This pull quote from the top right of the PDF really hits the nail on the head for me:
“What makes power dangerous is how it’s used. Power over is driven by fear.
Daring and transformative leaders share power with, empower people to, and inspire people to develop power within.”
Consider this your reminder to lead WITH people not over them. Inspire, and help anyone you lead to reach inside and “develop power within”.
